In May of last year, I bought a Samsung refrigerator. It's a french door style with the freezer on bottom. I bought it, (stupidly), simply because I liked the way it looked. Not the most adult way to make a major purchase, but in my defense, I'd never bought one before. It was exciting and I was thinking more of how it would look in my kitchen. I know better now and next time I will do my research.
This fridge has been nothing but problems. Within the first month the two crisper drawers were filling with water. We couldn't figure out why so we called the appliance store where we bought it and they sent someone to look at it. They said, oh the drain pipes have frozen, probably from being set too cold. My counters were covered with the contents of the fridge as they had to remove everything, and the shelves, to remove the inside panel to pour hot water on the pipes to thaw them while using a blow dryer on the coils. It was a mess. It was a hassle. A big one. But we thought it was fixed and all was well.
For about a week.
Frozen over again, water filling up, temp not controlling right. Every time we open it water is getting on the floor, food is getting ruined. Called them again and they sent someone out again. This time they said it was because the whole unit wasn't level by 3/4 of an inch, causing too much water to pool forward and not drain fast enough so it would freeze, block the pipes, they'd freeze, yadda yadda yadda. So we fixed that problem, took everything out of the fridge, AGAIN, did the whole pain in the butt process to thaw it all, again. Major hassle. But we breathed a sigh of relief thinking that this time, it was really and truly fixed.
Yeah, no. No it wasn't.
It filled up with water again. The drain pipes froze, again.
This time these guys say, "I don't know... Samsung made it, call them." By this point we've done some research. Come to find out, it's a defect. Several of the models of the french door, bottom freezer refrigerators have a defect where the drain pipes are too damn small for the amount of water going through, so it gets backed up, freezes and then overflows. This can affect the fridge's ability to cool the food properly. So let me say that again. It's a DEFECT in the DESIGN. We didn't break anything, it wasn't something that was working properly and then malfunctioned. It was malfunctioning from the moment it was made. This was not our fault or our responsibility.
I contacted Samsung and after a lengthy process in which the very rude customer reps wanted to be totally and completely sure that yes, I did buy it, I do own it, no I didn't find it on the side of the road, they were about to send out a tech to replace those drain pipes when they found another piece of information. Apparently, the store we bought it from was not an Authorized Samsung Dealer. The rude and condescending representative explained that because of this the fridge is only under warranty one year from its' manufacture date, which so happened to have expired four months before I bought it. They would happily send a tech to come fix it, but we'd have to pay for the visit and the repairs.
Excuse me? You expect me to pay to fix something that is a defect in your design, a defect that in no way could I have prevented or known about? Uh, no. Just no. That is bad policy, bad form and just plain wrong. I would understand if it was something that was working right and then malfunctioned and it was beyond warranty. Sure, I'd pay to fix it then. But something that was bad right from the get go? You designed it bad and you want me to pay for your mistake?? With your millions and millions of dollars are you somehow so hurting for money Samsung that you have to fleece your customers by charging them to correct your screw up?
Apparently yes, they think that is a great company policy since I'm not the only one they are doing this to. There is currently a class action lawsuit against Samsung for a number of their refrigerators doing this exact thing. I am already looking in how to join it. This is unacceptable and if we allow a company to walk all over us like this then it teaches them that it is ok to do. That we won't stand up to them.
Samsung doesn't respect or value their customers and they don't take responsibility when they sell a bad product. They don't care about making it right, they only care about the money. Don't buy Samsung. Unless throwing money away and being treated like garbage is your thing. If it is then you'll fit right in as a customer of this bad company.

I've never done a review before, but I felt this one was necessary. If it keeps even one person from throwing a couple grand away then it's worth it and I've done my job.
